Principal Message

Oki, Danit’ada, Tân’si, Aba Wathtech, Tawnshi, Hello!

We are now almost one month into the school year, and it has been wonderful to feel the energy and excitement in our building. Our school priorities of excellence in learning, well-being for all, and diversity and inclusion align closely with the CBE’s system priorities and guide all we do together.

A warm welcome to Jenifer Hampton and Nasiba Barakatshah who have joined our Grade 3 team. Over the summer, Ms. Frisby accepted a Learning Leader position at another school, and we wish her all the best in her new role.

Our Open House Meet the Teacher event was a great success, with students proudly guiding families through their classrooms and learning spaces. We are grateful to our School Council and parent community for organizing the delicious staff potluck that evening—your generosity was deeply appreciated!

Our Terry Fox Run was another highlight, with students nearly doubling our $1,000 fundraising goal. Families can still donate if they wish—thank you for supporting this important cause.

Over the summer, playground walking surfaces were upgraded to make them safer and less slippery, especially when wet.

In classrooms, we have launched exciting numeracy and literacy initiatives:

  • Kindergarten: Ms. Roji joins us on Monday–Thursday mornings (and some Fridays) to support smaller learning groups in literacy and numeracy alongside Ms. Lim and Ms. Gleeson.
  • Grades 1–2: Learning Leader Lauren Eagen is leading a Class Size Reduction Support model, with students regrouping for targeted literacy and numeracy instruction—Grade 2 in the mornings and Grade 1 in the afternoons. This approach gives students more individualized attention during these foundational years.

We have received questions regarding potential labour action as of October 6. Please visit the CBE Labour Action page for the latest updates. At this time, it is business as usual at our school.

Finally, belonging, community, and joy in learning remain at the heart of our work. Students know that something big is coming as part of our Joy Initiative—stay tuned for more details soon!

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in making our school a place where every child can thrive.

Warm regards,

Gavin Schumm Principal

MyCBE

Your MyCBE is one of the most valuable tools available to parents. This is where you will find your student’s report card, attendance, and teacher contact

information. You will also use this tool to register for the lunchroom supervision program and bus transportation service. Student fees can be viewed and paid through MyCBE.

If you have not yet created your account, we highly encourage you to do so. We also

recommend each parent has their own account to access their student(s) information.

For support with the MyCBE please visit: MyCBE Support

Student Uniform Requirements

We understand that our families value the school uniform as an important part of the

TLC program. We appreciate your support in ensuring your child comes to school each day in the appropriate uniform. If you are unsure about the expectations, please refer to the TLC Uniform Requirements for guidance TLC Uniform Requirements .

All uniform pieces should be clearly and permanently labelled with the child’s name so that if a piece is found it may be returned to the correct student.

New School Year Forms

Each school year, parents and legal guardians are asked to complete or review and update a variety of forms. Some are sent home in paper format, while others are available online. Within the CBE, online forms are accessed through MyCBE > SchoolEngage and include:

  • Demographic Verification – 2025-2026 – This form includes your child’s personal information as well as parent / legal guardian contact information.
  • Citizenship Information Update – 2025-2026 – This form becomes available if you change your child’s citizenship information on the Demographic Verification form.
  • Annual Authorization – 2025-2026 – Combines the following forms:
o    School District Use of Personal Information - explains how CBE uses personal information in providing education services.
o    Consent for CBE Use of Student Information – provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by school/district and third parties.
o    Consent for Use of Student Information by News Media and Outside Groups (Third Party) - provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by outside groups and third parties

Please complete a Student Health Plan form if:

  • Your student has a physical or medical condition that may affect their attendance at school;
  • There is medication to be taken at school

This form must be emailed back to the school at drjkmulloy@cbe.ab.ca.

Please have all forms submitted by October 2, 2025

Fees and Waivers

If you’ve registered your child for lunchroom supervision and/or bus transportation, you’ll notice those fees pop up in your account around mid-October.

Field trip fees will make their appearance in advance of each exciting adventure. Please know that no child is ever denied access to education in The Calgary Board of

Education (CBE) because of an inability to pay. If fees present a challenge, there are several ways to qualify for a central fee waiver.

For more information on how to apply for the waiver program, please visit: CBE Waivers

Parent Society and School Enhancement Committee

One of the most meaningful ways parents, guardians, and community members enrich our school is through their involvement in the School Council. From supporting student

learning tools and technology to organizing community BBQs, funding field trips, and so much more, the positive impact of our council is felt by every student.

As a parent at Dr. J.K. Mulloy School, you are automatically a valued member of the School Council, and we would love for you to join us! Our monthly meetings are held virtually at 6:30 p.m.—a wonderful opportunity to stay connected, share ideas, and help shape the learning experiences of our students.

Together, we can continue to make our school an even better place for all children to learn and thrive!

Meeting  Dates/Schedule  2025-2026

September 25, October 23, November 20, January 22, February 24, March 17, April 21, May

26, and June 16

Drop off and Pick-Up

The safety of our students is the most important thing at our school. Please help us keep everyone safe by following these rules:

  • Staff Parking Lot : We want to set a good example for our children by not standing or walking through the parking lot. The school parking lot is for staff only. Parents should not drive or park in the parking lot.
  • Use Crosswalks: Always use the crosswalks to cross the street and the parking lot. This keeps everyone safe. As well as the crosswalk in our parking lot.
  • No Illegal U-Turns: Please do not make U-turns or park in areas where it is not allowed. It is very dangerous for our students.
  • Best Place to Park: We recommend parking on Hunterslea Crescent (see below) on the north side of the school. There is lots of parking there, and it is only a short, safe walk through the school field

Parking

Thank you for helping us keep our children safe every day!

If your child normally takes the bus but you are picking up, please contact the school and make sure to sign your child out on the sign out board outside the office so your child is accounted for on the bus attendance list. This helps our buses leave the school on time.

Supervision for students will be provided until 4:00pm.

Student Absence

If your student will be absent, please send an email to drjkmulloy@cbe.ab.ca and their attendance will be updated. If you prefer to call and leave a voicemail on our absence line, please call 403-777-6640 and press option 1. We ask that you provide your student’s first and last name, their teacher, and the reason for their absence. If you have more than one student, you can notify us of both students' information in the same message.

If your student will be absent for 10 or more days, you must complete an Extended Absence form and send it back to the school email.

Volunteers

We welcome volunteers to support classrooms, field trips, and school activities. Many of these opportunities wouldn’t be possible without your help!

Important | For the 2025–26 school year, the CBE will cover the full cost of the online police check with a voucher.

Fundraiser | Spirit Wear

Please visit our Merchandise page.

Be YOU! Days

Celebrate diversity, inclusion, and self-expression at our school. Students are encouraged to showcase their unique identities and interests—whether by wearing their team colours, cultural attire, favourite sports gear, meaningful accessories, or items that reflect their personal hobbies or passions. These days help build a school community where everyone feels valued, respected, and proud to be themselves. Our first BeYOU!Day will be October 31.

Character Education

Please visit our Character Education page.

Bus Safety

Safety is always our number one priority. We kindly ask that you review appropriate bus behaviour with your child.

Weather

Calgary weather can be unpredictable, so please remember that students go outside at recess and lunch unless the temperature hits –20C. They will always need to be wearing

appropriate clothing for the often-sudden changes in temperature. This clothing should be labelled so that if lost we can help the student find it quickly.
